Introduction to Mastodon and Bluesky (Zoom)
by Mysti Berry
7 PM

Mastodon is an open-source, federated social media site. That means that it’s all volunteer, no ads, and there are many servers that communicate with each other. It can be a bit daunting at first, but the conversations there are much like the early days of Twitter. You can learn more here. You can also look around before you decide to create an account.

Bluesky was created by Twitter’s founder, Jack Dorsey with the goal of being decentralized (like Mastodon!), to give users more control. You can look around before deciding to create an account.

Whats the difference? Well, Bluesky is easy to sign up for and use. It sends things to your feed based on algorithms, similar to Twitter, beyond just what you choose to follow. Mastodon, on the other hand, only does what you tell it to, and it can feel like a lot to learn at first. Also, there are more users on Bluesky than Mastodon.
