To celebrate the conclusion of the exhibit, Bullets Across the Bay: The San Francisco Bay Area in Crime Fiction, the Library at the University of California, Berkeley, in partnership with Mystery Writers of America, NorCal Chapter and Sisters in Crime, Northern California Chapter, is holding a closing reception on Friday, February 24, 2012 from 6:00-8:00pm in the Morrison Library. The program will feature five local mystery authors reading selections from their favorite Bay Area crime and detective novels, followed by an opportunity for audience members to engage the readers and exhibit curators in Questions and Answers.

“Bullets Across the Bay” exposes the richness of the University Library collections for the study of detective narrative and genre fiction set in the San Francisco Bay Area. From 19th-century dime novels to today’s bestsellers, the exhibit features examples of novels both iconic and obscure that provide commentary on topics such as cultural diversity and historical events represented in popular literature. It also highlights resources for the academic study of the mystery genre and chronicles the careers and influence of some of the titans of the Bay Area mystery scene: Dashiell Hammett, Anthony Boucher, Marcia Muller, and Bill Pronzini—as well as the work of many other authors whose writing contributes to the wealth of fiction on either side of the Bay Bridge.

The exhibit is on display in the Bernice Layne Brown Gallery through February 29, 2012.

Is Florida sounding pretty good right now? How about in March? Here’s some information from Julie Compton, the Co-Chair of SleuthFest, scheduled to take place March 1-4 in Orlando:

SleuthFest is sponsored by the Florida Chapter of Mystery Writers of America. Our guests of honor in 2012 are Charlaine Harris and Jeffery Deaver, and our Thursday Spotlight Speaker is Chris Grabenstein. In addition to our jam-packed schedule of panels, demonstrations, luncheons, the SleuthFest 101 Dinner, Readers’ Corner, our short story contest, and our Agents and Editors cocktail party (to name just a few!), attendees also have the option to sign up for Third Degree Thursday, a day devoted to craft-oriented, hands-on workshops. Additionally, our Orlando location this year has allowed us to schedule a few new activities, such as a trip to a gun range and a mystery dinner theatre.

Our hotel, the Royal Plaza, is located in the Walt Disney World© Resort and is within walking distance of restaurants, shopping and entertainment. It’s a great destination location for writers and their families.

More information about the conference is available at www.sleuthfest.com. If you have any questions, let me know and I’ll be happy to answer them.
